Mendel Pass
The Mendel Pass connects South Tyrol with Trentino and offers racing cyclists a smooth, scenic ascent. The pass road is well maintained, has little traffic and is open all year round.
The road bike tour to the Mendel Pass starts in Gand near Eppan and initially leads leisurely through orchards and vineyards towards Kaltern. From Kaltern, the steady ascent to the 1,363 metre high pass begins. In around 13.5 kilometres, you climb 880 metres in altitude, spread over numerous wide hairpin bends with a gradient of mostly 6-7%. The route is easy to cycle, scenic and always offers marvellous views of the Adige Valley, Lake Kaltern and the Dolomites. Once at the top, the pass summit invites you to take a short break with a panoramic view. Early in the morning, the pass is particularly quiet and offers perfect conditions for racing cyclists.

The famous Mendel cable car (built in 1903) is one of the oldest funicular railways in Europe and runs from Kaltern to the top of the pass. Even in imperial times, the pass was a favourite health resort for high society, including Empress Sisi.
About west of the pass, a small road leads to Monte Penegal. From there you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view: Bolzano, Lake Kaltern, Val di Non and the Dolomites - a fantastic 360° view.
