Start and finish location
Prad am Stilfser Joch

The road bike tour from Prad am Stilfser Joch to the Passo dello Stelvio is one of the most legendary climbs in the Alps. Over around 25 kilometres, you climb 1,810 metres in altitude and negotiate 48 spectacular hairpin bends - a true monument to cycling. The climb begins moderately, leading through Gomagoi and Trafoi, before becoming significantly steeper and more challenging from Franzenshöhe. The last few kilometres are physically demanding, but the scenery is breathtaking: the panorama of the Ortler group accompanies you up to the top of the pass at 2,757 metres. At the top, not only a magnificent view awaits you, but also the feeling of having mastered a real sporting challenge.

It's worth starting early, as the route is particularly busy in summer. Warm clothing is a must - even in the sun it can get very chilly at the summit. If you want to extend the tour, you can descend over the Umbrail Pass to Santa Maria and cycle back to Prad via Glurns. This variant offers a marvellous loop with less traffic and rounds off the experience impressively. The Stelvio Pass is not just a pass - it is a legend on two wheels.

Worth knowing

After 5 years of construction, the almost 50 km long Stelvio Pass road was completed in 1825. Under Emperor Franz I, the road was intended to connect Lombardy, which at the time was part of the Austrian Empire, with the rest of the empire. On the South Tyrolean side, the road consists of just under 25 kilometres with 48 hairpin bends, on the Lombardy side of just under 22 kilometres with 34 hairpin bends, as well as 6 tunnels.
