Passo Giau
The Passo Giau is one of the most beautiful Dolomite passes: steep, panoramic and quiet. At an altitude of 2,233 metres, it offers breathtaking views of the Marmolada, Tofana and Pelmo. Especially early in the morning, the pass is an insider tip for undisturbed moments and impressive photos.
The Passo Giau is one of the most impressive Dolomite climbs. From Cortina d'Ampezzo, you start in the direction of Pocol, where the actual climb begins. Over the course of around 16 kilometres, you will climb around 1,100 metres in altitude - at a constant gradient of 9-10%. The road is narrow, well tarmaced and winds its way through numerous bends through forests and later through open high mountains. The view widens with every bend: Marmolada, Tofane, Monte Cristallo - a real natural cinema.
The pass at 2,233 metres is a fantastic photo spot and invites you to take a break. If you still have energy left, you can extend the tour via Colle Santa Lucia or the Falzarego. Overall, the route offers not only a sporting challenge, but also a scenic highlight. It's worth starting early - less traffic, better light and pleasant temperatures. The tour is ideal for trained riders who want to conquer one of the most beautiful Dolomite passes.

What else there is to know about the Alpine Pass
Fancy a few side facts about the Alpine pass? We reveal insider tips, the best photo spots and everything else there is to know about the pass.
It is particularly famous for its 360° views - sunrises and sunsets are spectacular. Unlike many passes, the Giau was only tarmaced in the 1980s - before that it was barely accessible. Today, however, it is relatively quiet as it is not a transit route - ideal for racing cyclists.
Early in the morning, the Giau is often completely empty and the light on the Marmolada, Pelmo and the Cinque Torri is spectacular. Less well known: In the area surrounding the pass, there are remains of positions from the First World War - especially towards the Averau plateau. Quiet, steeped in history, impressive.
About 300 metres west of the top of the pass (towards Selva), there is a small indentation with a perfect view of Pelmo, Croda da Lago and the entire pass road - perfect for drone or wide-angle shots.
