Tramin - Mendel Pass
The classic ascent from Tramin to the Mendel Pass first leads through the vineyards of the lowlands and past the village of Kaltern before the actual ascent begins. The road climbs at a gradient of around six to seven per cent over 14 even hairpin bends, offering impressive views of Lake Kaltern and the Adige Valley time and again. Thanks to the constant gradient, the pass can be ridden at a steady pace until you reach the pass summit at 1,363 metres. It is worth starting early, as there is more traffic later on; the route is usually particularly quiet during the week. Make sure you have enough water, as there are hardly any refreshment stops along the way.
