Lago di Braies and Prato Piazza
Road bike tour to Lake Braies and Prato Piazza
You start at the Sporthotel exclusive in San Vigilio and cycle over the pass road to Marebbe and on to the Furcia Pass at 1759 metres. Follow the country road past Gaiselsberg and Gassl to Mitterolang and cycle along the well-known Val Pusteria/Pustertal cycle path past the Olang/Olang reservoir to Monguelfo/Welsberg. Continue along the Val Pusteria/Pustertal state road until you reach the turn-off to Braies/Prags on the right shortly after Monguelfo/Welsberg. Follow the signs to the Pragser Wildsee lake and enjoy the picturesque view. Now take the same country road back to the village centre of Braies and turn right towards Prato Piazza. Prato Piazza is a much-visited high plateau in the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park and lies at an altitude of around 2000 metres. The Prato Piazza is surrounded by the Three Peaks, the Tofana and Monte Cristallo. After a well-earned rest, the route now descends again to the main road in Val Pusteria/Pustertal.
Depending on your fitness level, there are two different options for the way back:
a) You cycle to Olang and over the Furkelpass back to the Sporthotel exclusive in St. Vigil.
b) Cycle along the Val Pusteria cycle path to San Martino near San Lorenzo/St. Lorenzen and follow the country road to the Saaler Wirt inn in the pilgrimage town of Maria Saalen. After a coffee break, continue along the country road to San Vigilio.
