The Mendelrunde is one of the classic racing bike routes in South Tyrol and starts in Tramin. From there, it leads through the Adige Valley into Trentino to Cles, the home town of former professional cyclist Maurizio Fondriest. The climb to the Mendel Pass begins at the Santa Giustina reservoir: a steady ascent with many hairpin bends and sweeping views over the Adige Valley and Lake Kaltern. At the top of the pass, there is a short panoramic stop before the wide Mendola road allows for a smooth, long descent back down into the valley. It's worth starting early, as is the car-free cycling day in September. As there are only a few places to stop for refreshments along the way, make sure you have enough water and snacks with you.
