The Postalm is Austria's largest mountain pasture and an insider tip for racing cyclists with a quiet toll road, magnificent views and rustic huts. The ascent from Strobl offers a sporting challenge and scenic enjoyment. The road bike tour from Strobl to the Postalm is a scenic highlight in the Salzkammergut. From the town centre in Strobl, you start at just under 540 m above sea level and initially ride comfortably along the Wolfgangsee main road. Shortly after the end of the village, the toll road branches off to the Postalm - this is where the actual ascent begins. Over the course of around 12 kilometres, you will cover around 720 metres in altitude with an average gradient of 7%.

The road is well maintained, has little traffic and leads through shady forest sections and open Alpine pastures. The upper section in particular offers views of the Postalm plateau with its wide, open mountain backdrop - a real nature experience. At the top of the pass, rustic huts and the opportunity to take a break with a view of the Tennen Mountains await you. Overall, the route offers a perfect mix of sporting challenge and scenic enjoyment - ideal for ambitious racing cyclists who want to experience the Salzkammergut from its quieter side. An early start is worthwhile: little traffic, clear views and fresh mountain air make the tour a real pleasure.

Worth knowing

At around 42 km², the Postalm is the largest contiguous alpine pasture area in Austria. It is located at around 1,200 metres above sea level in the Salzkammergut between Strobl and Abtenau. The name "Postalm" comes from the k.u.k. Post, whose employees once spent their summer holidays here.

Insider tip

Numerous rustic huts on the Alm offer regional specialities, including Alpine cheese, farmer's doughnuts and cheese dumplings.
